Patna: Opposition RJD on Tuesday accused Chief Minister Nitish Kumar of misleading people on the 1996 Ganga Water Sharing Treaty and demanded that he take back his comments against erstwhile Lalu Prasad government on the issue.

RJD leader MP Jagdanand Singh claimed that the erstwhile RJD government had strongly opposed the Ganga water sharing with Bangladesh much before and after the treaty.

Kumar had yesterday accused the erstwhile Lalu Prasad government in the state and the Centre of having ignored the interests of Bihar while signing the treaty.

''The erstwhile Lalu Prasad government had not even objected to the treaty,'' he had said.

Singh, the water resource minister in Prasad's cabinet, told newsmen that RJD had lodged its protests with the Centre against the treaty. ''Nitish Kumar should have gone through the documents first before levelling charges.''

He said due to the protests by the then RJD government the union water resource ministry, Central Water Commission and Ganga Flood Control Committee had a meeting soon after the treaty and the Centre had promised that the interests of the state would not be ignored or compromised following the accord.

YASSER - ASSAM
IN THE YEAR 1996 , THE NDA WAS RULING THE ROOST AND THEY WERE STRONG ANTI BIHARI STANCE ONLY DUE TO THEIR DISLIKE OF Mr LALU. UNFORTUNATELY, UPPER CLASS PEOPLE WERE MUM AT THAT TIME ALSO ON ACCOUNT OF THEIR ANTIPATHY TOWARDS Mr LALU PRASAD YADAV. HATING A PERSON IS ANOTHER THING BUT TO SEE AND INTRERPRET THE ISSUE THROUGH THIS PRISM OF HATRED IS MOST UNFORTUNATE HAPPENING IN INDIA.
