Patna: Senior Congress leader and Member
of Legislative Council (MLC) Mahachandra Prasad Singh has
resigned from primary membership of the party to protest
the UPA government "failure" to grant a special status to
Bihar.

"I have sent my resignation letter to the Congress
President Sonia Gandhi yesterday apprising her of the
reasons for his quitting the party," he told reporters here.
"It was a difficult decision to part with the Congress
with which I have been associated for long till date and
represented it in the legislative council for 30 years from
Saran (graduate) constituency," Singh said.

The Congress leader, however, said that he took the
decision coming to know that the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh
had not given appointment to the Chief Minister,Nitish
Kumar-led delegation on the issue recently.
The non-consideration of the demand for special status
to Bihar in view of its dire financial situation following
carving out of Jharkhand was an insult to the 9-crore people
of the state, he said.

On whether he will be joining the ruling JD(U) as was
being speculated, Singh said that he would take decision about
his political future after consulation with friends, well
wishers and supporters.
