Patna: Two interns of TISS, who went to conduct a survey at a hospital in Muzzafarpur district of Bihar on behalf of their organisation, were accused of sexual assault by the hospital staff, beaten publicly and later handed over to police.

The interns, Mohammad Shadab and Shikhar Singh, who are graduates from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, went to collect data on healthcare administration at Sadar hospital in coordination with Bihar`s Health Department. However, the hospital staff alleged that they misbehaved with them.

On the other hand, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation issued a statement to Zee News, stating “The two men detained at the Muzaffarpur Hospital in Bihar are/were not employed as interns or in any other capacity at any given point of time by the Foundation. They were working as data collectors contracted independently by a grantee as a part of ‘Bihar Knowledge Network’ grant awarded in November 2013 which aims to understand knowledge flows across networks in the health system in Bihar.”

On the other hand, kins of the two accused and TISS officials have completely denied such allegations. They have indeed accused the hospital staff for levelling false accusations against the two.

The district police is now investigating the matter and the SSP Jitendra Rana has assured to get to the bottom of the case.

The duo are currently in custody.
