BJP govt resumes Cong's tribal welfare schemes in Baran

In the wake of reports of alleged malnutrition deaths among Sahariya tribes, the BJP government in Rajasthan has decided to resume welfare schemes for tribals in the district which were introduced by the previous Congress regime.

Baran: In the wake of reports of alleged malnutrition deaths among Sahariya tribes, the BJP government in Rajasthan has decided to resume welfare schemes for tribals in the district which were introduced by the previous Congress regime.

The government has ordered the implementation of the Sahariya Tribal Welfare Schemes, which were launched during the previous Congress government, in Baran district after reviewing and revising them in the present context, Baran District Collector Lalit Gupta said.

The state government gave?sanction to the revised programme yesterday, he said.

As per the schemes, people of Sahariya tribe will entitled to 200 job days instead of 100 while children, pregnant women and mothers of the community will be given double?the food supplements at Anganwadi centers.

Hunger and malnutrition cases have been reported among the tribal Sahariya community in Baran with the matter having come to national attention due to several hunger deaths over the last 12 years.

The Sahariyas, concentrated in Baran district, are one of the most backward tribes of the state.

The issue of deaths of children due to malnutrition or hunger in Rajasthan was recently taken up in the state Assembly with the government denying that any such instances had come to light.
