Mumbai: Bombay High Court today directed the
Central Government to file its report about the assessment of
toxicity on imported Chinese toys.
The court was hearing a PIL filed by city-based Consumer
Welfare Association, which seeks a ban on import on Chinese
toys on the ground that they contain high levels of toxic
chemicals.
Petitioners' advocate Rithuja Ambekar stated that the
court had directed the government to form a committee and file
a report in this regard as back as July this year, but no
report has been filed yet.
Division bench led by Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar
gave government two weeks to produce the report.
In January this year the government had informed the
court that it had banned import of toys from China for a
period of six months as an interim measure, till the toxicity
of the toys was assessed.
