China learning English to beat India in IT London: India is falling behind China in its attempts to increase the use of English, risking squandering a key economic advantage, a new report India's top 10 BPOs says.

A "huge shortage" of teachers and quality institutions means China may now have more people who speak English than India, says the study by the British Council, Britain's international cultural relations body.

The study estimates less than five per cent of the Indian population speaks English, which would mean that only about 55 million people in India will be fluent English speakers by 2010.

In comparison China adds 20 million English speakers each year as a result of new education policies that require English to be a compulsory subject in primary schools. According to an earlier British Council study, China had 200 million English users in 1995.

India's emergence as a major software and IT hub has in part been possible due to its English-educated workers, but the study says English is a "casualty of wider problems in Indian education".

"The rate of improvement in the English language skills of the Indian population is at present too slow to prevent India from falling behind other countries which have implemented the teaching of English in primary schools sooner, and more successfully," says the study, English Next India, written by British author David Gradoll.

"China may already have more people who speak English than India," it said, adding India will need many more people speaking English to sustain its economic growth, according to the BBC. "Poor English is one of the causes" of Indian universities falling far short of rival countries in the quality of teaching and research.

The study says a range of approaches is required to improve English proficiency in India, and no single method will help.

I just completed my education from uk. Like every other guy in India I had attraction of western countries. But after coming here I realise that how India is the most awesome country in the world. Different languages, food, clothes, culture is soul of BHARAT. We dnt need to get influence due to sm survey like this one. Instead just relying on this english language surveys and globle market, lets improvise, preserve and protect our home using out own soil, culture and language. We dnt need to compete with anyone to develop BHARAT.

Well it is not unusual for india to be lethargic in all the sphere of global activities. They are so slow even a snail wold overtake India if there was a race. Slowness is a national policy that doomes the system and India takes it on the stride, allowing the others to overtake it. The education system has become a lucarative business serving the interest of unscruplus eliments, whose sole aim is to make money and permit only those, regardless of merits, but afford to greese the palms. Indian educational system under the Politicians and film actors are suffering. Many talented, but poor are languishing, leaving the mainstreem of higher education as they are uable to cough up the exorbitant fees imposed on them. They return to the backyard of their villages to wallow in darkness. India has lost many scientists, technicians doctors as 80% of Indians are deprived of higher education. This malicious system is unique not only in education, but it ranges from defence, national security, sports and many more. Indians went around with the begging bawl for food some 50 years ago. Now it goes around begging for technology, which is the end result of 50 years negligence of national interest and failure to lift up the educational system. Unless, development reaches the rural India, where the talent is, India will remain a defeted country and will remain so for a many mosr years.

As long as we have organisations such as the Shiv Sena, left parties and Jamiat parties India will fall behind. English is now an international language and should be learnt by each and every Indian school children in addtion to Hindi and the local mother tongue be it marathi, urdu or tamil
