New Delhi: Results of the third survey of the labour bureau for the April-June quarter, assessing the impact of economic slowdown on employment, is expected to be released on Friday.
"We are going to come out with the quarterly report by
tomorrow (Friday) most probably," Labour and Employment Minister Sudha Pillai said on the sidelines of a function here yesterday.
The first survey conducted for the October-December quarter after onset of recession had revealed half a million job losses in various sectors.
Results of the second survey for the January-March quarter reflected a slight recovery with employment in selected sectors increasing by about a quarter million.
Talking to reporters, Pillai said social security cover like the government's EPF scheme proved a blessing for lakhs of people during the last financial year hit by the global meltdown.
"About 99 lakh EPF subscribers filed claims to withdraw money which in our opinion was the manifestation of the fact that they needed the money," Pillai said. Normally, about 50 lakh subscribers file claim for EPF fund every year.
She said such a large number of applicants also
reflected that EPF subscribers "could fall back on provident
fund savings if they lose jobs. That cushions the blow."
