New Delhi: Imports of sensitive items like
edible oils, tea, coffee and milk products rose by 34.5 per
cent during the April-October period, fuelled by a massive
376.6 per cent jump in milk products import.
The overall import of these items went up to Rs 35,487
crore during the first seven months of this fiscal from Rs
26,378 crore in the same period last year, according to the
official data released here today.
Edible oils, milk and milk products, coffee and tea among
other items fall in the sensitive items category and their
imports are monitored by Government to ensure that they are
not causing any adverse impact on the domestic industry,
particularly small and medium ones.
Imports of edible oil rose 73.3 per cent during the
reporting period. The imports of edible oils, milk and milk
products were at Rs 14,204.70 crore and Rs 131.16 crore
respectively, against Rs 8,195.45 crore and Rs 27.52 crore in
the same period previous fiscal.
The increase in edible oil import is mainly due to a
substantial increase in import of crude palm oils and its
fractions.
Tea and coffee imports surged by 88.7 per cent to Rs
185.39 crore in the period from Rs 98.23 crore.
However, import of certain other sensitive items like
automobiles, alcoholic beverages and SSI products like
umbrella, locks and toys dipped, the data said.
The overall imports (including sensitive items) during
the first five seven of this fiscal, however, declined by 21.8
per cent to Rs 7,16,535 crore from Rs 1,02,759 crore.
