Nikon hopes to widen distributor network New Delhi: Digital imaging equipment maker Nikon has undertaken a major exercise to penetrate smaller cities and towns, increasing distribution channels, to double its overall sales and market share.

The company, which earlier had only one national distributor, said it has appointed 22 distributors this year and plans to add six more by the end of the financial year.

"Earlier we were not directly dealing with our dealers. It was done through our national distributor. Now we want to get into the regional level and widen our distribution network," Nikon India Managing Director Hidehiko Tanaka said.

He said through this initiative, the company will be able to strengthen its presence in the Tier II cities and increase the retail points to around 1,200 across the country by the end of this fiscal.

At present, the company has around 800 retail points.

"Our objective is to expand our presence in smaller cities and towns like Lucknow, Chandigarh, Dehradun and Pune. So, we are in the process of appointing distributors in these regions," Tanaka said.

He did not disclose the company's investment plan for the initiative.

The Japan-based company said it expects to double its overall sales as well its share to 13 per cent in the Indian compact camera market by the end of this fiscal.
