Operators add record 16.67 mn subscribers in Oct: TRAI

Operators add record 16.67 mn subscribers in Oct: TRAI New Delhi: Telecom operators in the country added a record 16.67 million new mobile subscribers in October, the highest ever, driven mainly by the newly introduced per second billing plan.

According to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), India added 16.67 million wireless subscribers--GSM, CDMA and FWP combined--taking the total wireless subscriber base to 488.4 million at the end of October.

Tata Teleservices was the top grosser of subscribers with 3.87 million new users, followed by Vodafone at 2.98 million.

Country's largest operator in terms of subscriber base, Bharti Airtel added 2.7 million users in October 2009, while Aircel added 2.02 million subscribers.

The total telephone subscriber base in the country has increased to 525.65 million at the end of October 2009 from 509.03 million in September, registering a growth of 3.26 percent, TRAI said in a statement.

The wireline subscriber base saw a decline of 0.05 million to 37.25 million, it added.

With this, the overall tele-density (number of telephones per 100 people) has touched 44.87, it added.

Total broadband subscriber base increased by 2.49 percent to 7.4 million in October 2009 from 7.22 million in the previous month. - PTI
