Teledensity crosses 40; July mobile users addition at 14.38 mn New Delhi: India added a whopping 14.38 million wireless subscribers in July this year, taking the country's teledensity or number of users per 100 to 40.

Total wireless user base in the country swelled to 441.66 million. According to data released by Telecom Regulator TRAI, the growth in wireless segment was led by Airtel with an addition of about 2.8 million users, followed by Reliance Communications which added 2.3 million new subscribers.

Vodafone and Tata Teleservices (TTSL) added 2.2 million users each, while Idea increased its base by 1.3 million.

The total wireless -- GSM, CDMA and WLL(F)-- subscriber base stood at 441.66 million in July. However, the wireline connections declined by 0.13 million to 37.41 million during the month.

TRAI said the wireline subscriber base declined to 37.41 million users in July from 37.54 million in June 2009.

"While major private wireline service providers have increased their subscriber base, BSNL and MTNL lost 0.17 million subscribers in the month of July," TRAI added.

Airtel, added about 34,000 wireline users, while Reliance and Tata Teleservices also saw its base increase by 7,655 and 2,389 users.

The broadband subscriber base reached the 6.80 million- mark from 6.62 million in June, TRAI said.
