5 Maoists surrender in Chhattisgarh

Raipur: Five Maoists, including two women surrendered before police, a day after three police personnel and two Naxals were killed in a gun-battle with security personnel in Chhattisgarh's insurgency-hit Bijapur district.

The cadres, including a couple, surrendered themselves before state's Director General of Police AN Upadhyay and other senior officials at Bijapur district headquarter, Bijapur Additional Superintendent of Police Indira Kalyan Elesela told PTI.

Of them two commander rank cadres- Mantu Gonde, 35, and his wife Savita Sodhi, 25, were prominent faces of the outlawed movement in the region and carrying a reward of Rs 8 lakh each on their heads, Elesela said.

Associated with the movement since 2006, Mantu was presently active as commander of military platoon-2 of Maoist, Elesela said.

The equally dreaded Savita was deputy commander of section B of the same platoon, he said, adding that the couple was involved in several deadly Maoist incidents in the region.

Similarly, two other surrendered rebels- Ramsingh, 25, and Phooldev Marawi, 22, were active as members of military platoon -1 of the banned CPI (Maoist) and a reward of Rs 2 lakh each was announced for their arrest, he said.

Besides, a lower rung cadre Rajeswari alias Rajwati, 23, is also among the surrendered, he added.

The surrendered ultras in their statements said that the senior Maoist cadres are engaged in exploitation of lower rung cadres and women.

They also alleged that extortion and violence have become prime motive of senior cadres, he said.

Necessary assistance will be provided to them as per the government policy, the officer said.

Yesterday, three police personnel and two Maoists were killed in an gun-battle between a joint team of security forces and ultras near Jappemarka forests under Mirtur police station limits in Bijapur district.
