BJP finds it tough choosing Chhattisgarh by-poll candidate

Chhattisgarh`s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is finding it tough to choose a candidate to retain the crucial Sanjari Balod Assembly seat in the February 14 by-poll.

Raipur: Chhattisgarh`s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is finding it tough to choose a candidate to retain the crucial Sanjari Balod Assembly seat in the February 14 by-poll.

"There are about 10 local BJP leaders in Durg district who have all claimed to fight the election, but the state unit (of the party) is of the view that none of them will be able to pull off a victory... we are facing a real crisis of choosing a winning candidate for Sanjari Balod," a BJP source here said.

Now senior party leaders in the state, including party unit in-charge for Chhattisgarh JP Nadda, will hold a meeting here on Tuesday to pick a candidate who can overcome the Congress challenge in the Assembly by-poll.

The Congress lost the seat by just a few hundred votes in the November 2008 Assembly polls to the BJP`s Madanlal Sahu, who died following a cardiac arrest in August last year.

The filing of nominations for the seat will begin from January 21. The scrutiny of the nomination papers will take place on January 29. The polling is scheduled for February 14 and counting of votes will be held on February 17.
