Raipur: The ruling BJP criticised the Election Commission (EC) in Chhattisgarh calling it `biased` in favour of the opposition Congress party and accused it of failing to conduct fair elections in the state.
"The state election commission is biased and it seems as if it is playing the role of a Congress agent while implementing the code of conduct," BJP state spokesperson Srichand Sundarani told reporters Tuesday evening.
He alleged that the EC had ignored complaints against Congress leaders violating the model code of conduct whereas immediate action was taken against complaints filed against BJP leaders by Congress workers.
"We have lodged over 20 complaints against Congress leaders for violating the model code of conduct along with evidence, but no action has been taken against any of them, but quick action was taken in complaints against BJP. We register our protest against the double standards adopted by the Election Commission," he said.
He said that the BJP had registered complaints against Congress programme coordinator Bhupesh Baghel after several posters and banners were put up by him to greet people during the ongoing festive season, but no action taken against him. He said that an FIR should be registered against Bhupesh Baghel for violating the model code of conduct.
He also threatened to move the Election Commission of India if the state chief electoral officer does not heed the BJP`s complaints.
He said that no action was taken against Raipur Mayor Kiranmayi Nayak despite complaints of poll code violations filed against her, after water tankers carrying her name supplied water in several wards of the city.
