The Oval: Despite conceding defeat in the second ODI against England, former England captain Nasser Hussain feels that the touring Indian team has done well at Rose Bowl. While pointing out the need for improvement in the bowling front, he also maintained that there is enough batting talent in waiting in the Indian ranks.
“India did well at the Rose Bowl, it is just that England were better once again. Ajinkya Rahane top-scored for the second time in three matches and Suresh Raina`s 40 off 19 balls was the defining innings for India. India`s batting future looks bright as there seems to be enough talent in waiting. The fielding too looked vastly improved in difficult conditions,” Hussain wrote in his column for an Indian daily.
Nasser, who was at the centre of controversy for his ‘donkey’ remarks at the Indian fielders recently, said that it is high time the Indians bring on the young fast bowlers to strengthen the bowling department. “The bowling is a cause for worry. The average speed of the bowlers is around 125 kmph, which is military medium. Where are the young guns who can bowl at 140 kmph?” he said.
However, he was all praise for Praveen Kumar’s effort in England. He also called for a need to bring in genuine seaming all-rounders to the Indian side.
“Even when MS Dhoni is shuffling his bowlers, there is no variation in speed or bounce to catch the batsmen off-guard. Apart from Praveen Kumar, no other bowler looks capable of getting wickets. India need a couple of genuine seaming all-rounders. Where are the Kapil Devs? India must find replacements for Irfan Pathan and Ajit Agarkar,” he added.
