Raipur: A 48-year-old CRPF official died here on Monday after his service rifle allegedly went off accidentally in Chhattisgarh's Dhamtari district, police said.

Assistant Sub Inspector Dilip Chhavda (48) was on duty when the incident took place under Borai police station limits, Dhamtari Additional Superintendent of Police Ashok Tipre told PTI.

Belonging to the Central Reserve Police Force's (CRPF) 211 battalion, Chhavda was part of a patrol team which left the camp located in Borai, around 200 km away from the state capital this morning, Tipre said.

After covering a distance of around 2 km, his colleagues heard a gunshot and found that bullets from Chhavda's weapon had pierced his chest, he said.

When asked about any possibility of suicide, he said, "An enquiry will reveal details of the incident".

The victim was a native of Gujarat and his family members have been informed about the incident, he said.

A case has been registered in this connection and his body has been sent for autopsy, Tipre said, adding that a probe is on.
