New Delhi: Who can forget the breath-stopping action sequences in Hollywood blockbuster action flicks of yesteryears like Behind The Enemy Lines, Matrix, the Delta Force or the Oscar-winning war film `Hurt Locker` (2008).
But what if a disgruntled and disillusioned section of our society starts taking inspiration from those movies to learn newer bomb-making techniques, war-fare strategies and upgrade their knowledge of modern weaponry.
A top police official of Chhattisgarh has expressed fears that the home-grown rebels are using the plots and the actions sequences shown in these movies as training tool, a report said on Monday.
RK Vij, Additional Director General of Police, Naxal Operations, has revealed that action and war films from Hollywood have become a constant source of inspiration for Naxals, who are using these films to upgrade themselves and learn newer techniques to attack the security forces and create unrest.
In support of his claim, Vij recalls a recent incident where Naxals surgically planted an explosive device inside a dead CRPF jawan`s body - the tactics was taken straight from the Oscar-winning war film `Hurt Locker` (2008).
Vij further claimed that the anti-Naxal unit of the state police recently recovered huge number of CDs of Hollywood action movies when it busted a Naxal training camp in forests of Pidiya village.
"CDs of the movies like `Behind Enemy Lines`, `Delta Force`, `Die Hard`, `Matrix` and `God Must Be Crazy` were among those recovered from the site," Vij said.
Chhattisgarh police also recently recovered CD players and CDs of Hollywood movies from a Naxal training camp in Bijapur district. These were action films, depicting commando training, bomb-making process and warfare strategies.
Vij claimed that prima facie, it appears that Naxals were using CDs for training tribals.
"The proactive measures by security forces have made it difficult for Naxals to hold mass training camps. So they may be taking the help of action films," he said.
A senior Intelligence Bureau official was also quoted as telling, on the condition of anonymity, that these home-grown rebels were using Hollywood movies to "learn offence strategies and to get know-how about the latest weapons for the past several years".
"Naxals generally watch Hollywood movies to learn bomb-making process from foreign countries, and to keep themselves updated about new weapons. They don`t have experts in jungle warfare training, so by watching Hollywood movies they copy attacking strategies," Girish Pandey, Professor, Defence Studies at Government Science College was quoted as saying.
