Raipur: A Naxal deputy commander was killed and a police jawan injured in a fierce gun-battle between security personnel and ultras in Chhattisgarh's insurgency-hit?Bijapur district, police said today.
"The face-off took place in restive Munga forests under Gangaloor police station limits when a squad of district force carrying out a combing operation in the region late last evening," Bijapur Additional Superintendent of Police Indira Kalyan Elesela told PTI.
The deceased cadre has been identified as Korsa Aaytu, deputy commander of CNM (Chetna Natya Manch) in Gangaloor area, Elesela said.
When security personnel reached Munga forests, located around 450 kms away from here, a group of armed rebels opened indiscriminate firing on them injuring Head Constable Dashrath Naag, he said.
However, soon ultras fled from the spot when jawans launched retaliatory attack.
Subsequently, when the search party was returning to its camp, rebels again opened firing on them in the same region prompting jawans to heavily retaliate, the ASP said.
After the ensuing gunfight that lasted for around half-an-hour, naxals escaped to the core forests taking the advantage of darkness, he said.
While cordoning off the encounter spot, body of a rebel was recovered, the ASP said, adding that blood stains found at the spot indicated that some more ultras might either have been killed or injured in the gun battle.
Soon after being informed about the encounter, reinforcement was rushed to the spot.
After undergoing primary treatment, the injured cop was airlifted to Raipur for further treatment where his condition is stated to be stable, the ASP said.
