Bilaspur: The Chhattisgarh High Court has dismissed the bail petition of Naxal ideologue Narayan Sanyal, who is serving life-term on charges of sedition and colluding with Maoists to establish a network to fight the state.

A division bench of justices TP Sharma and Ranganath Chandrakar yesterday struck down Sanyal's petition after the state government opposed it, saying the bail cannot be granted since the high court had earlier rejected a similar request by PUCL leader Vinayak Sen.

Sen, Sanyal and Kolkata-based businessman Piyush Guha had been sentenced to life imprisonment on December 24, 2010 for sedition and colluding with Maoists to establish a network to fight the state.

58-year-old Sen, a paediatrician by training and vice-president of People?s Union of Civil Liberties, had been accused of acting as a courier for Sanyal, who was in jail, by carrying his messages and letters to the underground Maoists.

Sen was arrested on May 14, 2007 from Bilaspur and was in jail for two years before being granted bail by the Supreme Court in May last year.
