New Delhi: The Delhi Transport Corporation
(DTC) today informed the High Court that more than 2000
low-floor buses are to be added to its fleet in next three
months.
Filing an affidavit before the Division Bench of Justice
Vikramjit Sen and Justice Manmohan Singh, the DTC
Secretary-cum-Commissioner said 2136 buses are expected to be
received in the next three months.
It also said an additional 1250 buses for DTC was
approved by the cabinet.
The department has specified that "about 3372 buses are
running on contract carriage permits and 4553 buses operating
on CNG/clean fuel and cater to the city and NCR towns on
inter-state contract carriage permits".
In the backdrop of delay in phase-out of blueline buses
from the city roads, the Bench had directed DTC to specify the
number of low-floor buses is going to add to its fleet in next
three months.
The direction came following a delay by commercial
vehicle manufacturer Ashok Leyland and Tata Motors in handing
over the buses to DTC as per their agreement.
The court was hearing a matter taking suo motu cognisance
after an accident involving a blueline bus in October 2008 in
which 8 people were killed in Badarpur area.
The Court had directed phase-out of blueline buses after
which the city government launched low-foor buses on the city
roads last year.
