New Delhi: A Delhi-bound Air India flight from Toronto was diverted to Stockholm after one of the passengers fell sick a few hours after the aircraft took off from the Canadian city.

Air India flight Toronto-Delhi (AI-188), with 332 passengers and 14 crew members on board, took off from Toronto's Pearson International airport at 11.50 AM. Three hours later, 70-year-old Karnail Singh Jaswal complained of breathlessness.

A doctor on board the Boeing 777-300ER aircraft administered first aid and oxygen to Jaswal, a non-resident Indian holding Canadian citizenship, after which his condition became stable, an Air India official said.

But two hours later the passenger's condition again became unstable and the doctor advised immediate hospitalisation.

As the aircraft was flying over Swedish airspace, commander of the flight Capt J S Gill contacted Stockholm airport and sought permission to land there due to the medical emergency, he said.

Gill diverted the aircraft and it landed at Stockholm airport.

Soon after, Jaswal was rushed to a hospital in an ambulance which was waiting at the airport. Jaswal's condition is reported to be stable, the official said.

The aircraft resumed its onward journey and landed at at the IGI airport here at 1355 hours today after a delay of two hours.
