New Delhi: The Delhi High Court ordered the release of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday after he furnished a personal bond to get bail after a criminal defemation case was filed by Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) leader Nitin Gadkari.
Kejriwal walked out of Gate number 1 of Tihar jail tonite and was greeted by his supporters. He later returned to his Tilak Road residence.
Kejriwal was sent to judicial custody till June 6 after he refused to furnish a personal bond of Rs 10,000 to seek bail.
He was lodged in Tihar jail after a defamation case was filed against him by BJP leader Nitin Gadkari.
While hearing Kejriwal`s plea earlier today, the HC bench of Justice Kailash Gambhir and Justice Sunita Gupta asked the former Delhi CM not to make it as an issue of "prestige" and opined that he should first seek bail.
The division bench suggested the AAP leader to furnish a personal bond and seek his release from jail.
"Why are you taking (it) as a prestige? Don`t make it a question of prestige. File your personal bond, seek his (Kejriwal) release today. We can direct it now. You take instructions from him," the court said and posted the matter post lunch Tuesday.
Kejriwal on Monday moved a habeas corpus petition for his immediate release, saying he has been "illegally" sent to judicial custody on a "completely wrong premise of law" by the court`s orders of May 21 and May 23.
