New Delhi: The Centre on Wednesday told the Delhi High Court that Assam has expressed inability to provide its cops for being deputed in the national capital to ensure safety and security of persons hailing from north east states.
"In pursuance of the earlier direction of the court, we had written to eight north eastern states seeking their help in providing policemen on deputation here.
"Assam government has said that it cannot send policemen on deputation as there is lack of adequate police force in the state," the counsel for the Centre told a bench headed by Chief Justice G Rohini.
Earlier, the court had issued a slew of directions to ensure safety and security of people, hailing from north east states, here and said that cops from those states can be deployed in Delhi to instill faith in the victims.
It has also asked Delhi police to take preventive measures besides sensitizing the police force towards the need and grievances of people hailing from that region.
Delhi police said that it was open to good suggestions to improve its functioning.
The court has now fixed the matter for hearing on July 2.
The bench had taken suo motu cognizance of media reports about the death of Arunchal Pradesh student Nido Tania and had issued a slew of directions on the issue of safety and security of Northeast citizens.
19-year-old Tania, son of an Arunachal Pradesh MLA, died after he was allegedly beaten up by shopkeepers in Lajpat Nagar area in South Delhi.
Earlier, the court had criticized Delhi police for not complying "properly" with its several directions to curb hate crimes against the people from northeast in the national capital.
"Have you given the wide publicity in television, radio and in the print media of your helpline number: 1093. The effort Taken so far is not satisfactory. You have not done it," it had said.
