Baby Mahi loses battle for life; probe ordered Zeenews Bureau

Gurgaon: In a tragic development, after 90 long hours of anxiety and hope, rescuers on Sunday pulled out five-year-old Mahi's body from the 70-feet-deep borewell, in which she had fallen on Wednesday night.

The doctors at ESI Hospital in Manesar declared that the five-year-old baby was brought dead.

According to the doctors, Mahi had died soon after she fell into the borewell. Her body was today recovered in a decomposed state, they added.

The rescue team pulled out the child at 1.38 pm after tireless efforts spanning over four days. She was immediately shifted to an ambulance stationed at the site and then rushed to the ESI Hospital.

It may be noted that Mahi had not shown any movement for a long time before being pulled out of the borewell.

While oxygen was constantly supplied to Mahi ever since the rescue operation began, she did not have water or food for over 86 hours. A CCTV camera had also been lowered into the borewell to track the child’s movement.

Rescuers had last night managed to pierce a hard rock -- a major hurdle which they had been struggling to break for the last two days. The slab was located in the horizontal tunnel between the borewell and the pit dug up to rescue the child.

Mahi fell into the borewell at Kho village near Manesar while playing with her friends on June 20, her fourth birthday.

Over 100 officials from the Army, fire department, police, Gurgaon Rapid Metrorail, health and revenue departments, and locals were involved in drilling the pit parallel to the borewell.

Meanwhile, Haryana government ordered a magisterial probe into the death of the four-year-old girl.

"A magisterial inquiry has been ordered in the case," Gurgaon District Magistrate P C Meena said.

He said a case has also been registered against Rohatash Tayal, the landowner who had dug up the borewell.

Tayal has been absconding and the state police have sent out two teams to trace him.

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda condoled the death of Mahi and said her family would be adequately compensated.

Hoping to get the inquiry report at the earliest, Hooda said those found guilty would not be spared.

As it is mandatory to seek permission of the Deputy Commissioner to dig a borewell in Gurgaon as per the direction of the High Court, a separate case of contempt of court would also be initiated against Tayal, a spokesman of the district administration said.

The inquiry would be conducted by Additional Deputy Commissioner Gurgaon M Pandurang.

Very sad to hear about a beautiful birthday girl. At this hour, we are with Mahi`s parents. Where is Team Anna? Instead of fighting for corruption, please fight for negligence and irresponsible people. Visit all over India to see the unclosed borewells.

The first thing crosses my mind is how happy that girl would have been celebrating her 4th birthday.. there was a lot to heppen in her life... Such premature demise of hers trouched everyone , especially us as we were celebrating my sons birthday the same night., around the same time.. what heppened is too sad, but we should discount such things as a run of a mill .. there should be concrete development to prevent such things in future.. the owners should be held resposible and penalized severely for anything like pitholes, borewell, drainage, etc. which can cause such tragedy at no fault of the innocent victims. A step further in the form of enactment of some rule and giving a quick verdict in this case will give more coverage to this issue and help alter the causual approach of who dig it... and we can prevent anymore Mahi becoming another victim.

We were hoping that the bany girl will come alive from the borebell. But it is not. We are sorry and worry.I think this type incident have happened near about 6 time in Haryana.I think this type of incident only happening in Haryana. This is defaming the civil administration, social, religious and political workers and leaders and ruling party government. This is very much unfortunale incident.Supreme Court should take suo-mot action and order a high power judicial enquiry.High power judicial enquiry should give its report within one month.and person responsible for leaving this bore bell open should be punished withing six month through fast track court. And same thing should be done regarding other borewell incident cases in Haryana and whole India. So that such type of iresponsible could be prevented and for such type of people could take lesson and could fear to do this type of work.I express my solidarity with parent and family of MAHI and express my condolence to the bereaved family. .

Very distraught reading this..Poor kid. I hope the country learns a lesson from this. Sad to think that human life is still not valued by the government..:( Parents are responsible too for not providing parental support at 11 pm..:( High time a stringent child protection laws need to established. My comment is not intended to hurt anyone personally but just how I feel being a mom of 2 little girls.

IT IS A REMARKABLE WORK DONE BY THE ARMY AND OTHER ASSOCIATES IN THIS MISSION........THE CONTRACTOR OF THIS BORE WELL BE PROPERLY PUNISHED.................SUCH INCIDENTS/ACCIDENTS/FLOOD/FIRE/RESCUE OPERATIONS SHOULD BE SHOWN IN SUCH A WAY THAT PEOPLE NOT ONLY ENJOY IT BUT ALSO LEARN AS HOW TO HANDLE SUCH SITUATIONS IF IT TAKE PLACE AGAIN IN THE FUTURE........THE CAMERA MAN SHOULD HAVE A THIS THING IN HIS MIND...... .
