Baby Mahi loses battle for life; probe ordered Zeenews Bureau

Gurgaon: In a tragic development, after 90 long hours of anxiety and hope, rescuers on Sunday pulled out five-year-old Mahi's body from the 70-feet-deep borewell, in which she had fallen on Wednesday night.

The doctors at ESI Hospital in Manesar declared that the five-year-old baby was brought dead.

According to the doctors, Mahi had died soon after she fell into the borewell. Her body was today recovered in a decomposed state, they added.

The rescue team pulled out the child at 1.38 pm after tireless efforts spanning over four days. She was immediately shifted to an ambulance stationed at the site and then rushed to the ESI Hospital.

It may be noted that Mahi had not shown any movement for a long time before being pulled out of the borewell.

While oxygen was constantly supplied to Mahi ever since the rescue operation began, she did not have water or food for over 86 hours. A CCTV camera had also been lowered into the borewell to track the child’s movement.

Rescuers had last night managed to pierce a hard rock -- a major hurdle which they had been struggling to break for the last two days. The slab was located in the horizontal tunnel between the borewell and the pit dug up to rescue the child.

Mahi fell into the borewell at Kho village near Manesar while playing with her friends on June 20, her fourth birthday.

Over 100 officials from the Army, fire department, police, Gurgaon Rapid Metrorail, health and revenue departments, and locals were involved in drilling the pit parallel to the borewell.

Meanwhile, Haryana government ordered a magisterial probe into the death of the four-year-old girl.

"A magisterial inquiry has been ordered in the case," Gurgaon District Magistrate P C Meena said.

He said a case has also been registered against Rohatash Tayal, the landowner who had dug up the borewell.

Tayal has been absconding and the state police have sent out two teams to trace him.

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda condoled the death of Mahi and said her family would be adequately compensated.

Hoping to get the inquiry report at the earliest, Hooda said those found guilty would not be spared.

As it is mandatory to seek permission of the Deputy Commissioner to dig a borewell in Gurgaon as per the direction of the High Court, a separate case of contempt of court would also be initiated against Tayal, a spokesman of the district administration said.

The inquiry would be conducted by Additional Deputy Commissioner Gurgaon M Pandurang.

Its like a personal loss to me. I donot know how to react on this but baby was punished for the illegal act of one person. Its very embrassing that young babies are falling in open borewells every year all around the country. One after another tragidies are coming and no one from goverment and people around us are serious to take action against such acts. Baby Mahi where ever are you i want to say sorry from all of us that we were not able to take you from the Hands of God. I prey to lord Krishna that you always live in peace and again come to earth to your parents in the same

It is very sad to know about the death of Baby Mahi. We have to visuvalise the trauma that innocent baby mahi underwent. The GOI must pass suitable bill which shall prevent any individual or agency to keep any borewll Open. If any open wells are found they shall be closed and the charges shall be collected for such closing from the owner or agency including punishment.. For the sake of the innocent children whome we have lost in the last 3 to 4 years the govt. must act. It is also responsibility of every individual to see that if any open borewell is there within their house, they must make suitable arrangement to close it either temporarily or permanently. The local govt. authorities shall ensure the same.

My deepest of condolences for the death of a small girl, but somehow, I cannot help but think that there is a twisted conspiracy in this story. My co-readers, please try to understand that before you call anyone good for nothing, try to get to the bottom of it. Ever since the first baby, Prince fell in such a borewell, a number of children have been falling. I am not personally aware of any such story before Prince. Prince acquired a lot of fan-following and even film industry was not at all behind. Ever since then, babies have been falling. I personally feel that even parents are also playing a part in an effort and a bid to garner publicity and most importantly, a monetary gain. I forgive if I am wrong but I am helpless, but think this. Because the parents did not seem aggrieved, but they seemed rather tense as if something is under the wraps when they were being interviewed. Army and police have definitely done their job of rescuing. Anyway, my condolences to the baby! You will live forever in our hearts.

This type of accidents occur only in India. That too only for the poor children. why can`t the govt. take some strict measures atleast now.
