New Delhi: Rajya Sabha on Thursday passed a bill that would keep chairpersons of National Commissions for the SC and ST out of the purview of the office of profit.

The Parliament (Prevention of Disqualification) Amendment Bill, 2013, also seeks to include both the Commissions in the list of offices which are not affected by the office of profit clause.

The bill, which would also ensure that an MP can hold that post without facing any disqualification threat, would come into force effective from February 19, 2004.

Thanking members for lending "unconditional" support in passing the bill, Law Minister Kapil Sibal said it would come into effect on retrospective basis.

Earlier, speaking on the bill, members cutting across the party lines supported its provisions and thanked Sibal for bringing it into the Upper House after a long time.

However, Independent member Piyarimohan Mohapatra opposed the bill saying it could provide double-benefit to a single person.

Sibal assured him that government would ensure this did not happen.
