New Delhi: A businessman was arrested in the
capital for allegedly stage-managing a robbery in his house to
come out of huge debt he incurred in futures trading in gold,
police said.

Along with businessman Tarun Kumar Khandelwal, three
persons -- Salim (23), Suraj (22) and Monu (20) -- whom he
engaged for the robbery at his Safdurjung Enclave on August
30 were also arrested yesterday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) H G S Dhaliwal said
the arrest came following police finding out that Khandelwal
was continuously on phone with a person at the time of the
incident though he claimed that his hands were tied by the

"Khandelwal`s grandmother had left huge jewellery after
her death and same was lying inside her almirah which has not
been opened by any of the family members after her death. His
main motive was to obtain the jewellery/valuables kept by his
grandmother who had died 5-6 years ago," Dhaliwal said.

Khandelwal was interrogated first during which he broke
down and said to have admitted to have hatched a conspiracy to
rob his own house in association with the others.

He also told police that Salim was a tenant of Khandelwal
for the past 12 years.

"He discussed the plan with Salim. They both hatched the
conspiracy and decided to rob the jewellery and other
valuables when his family members would not be in house,"
Dhaliwal said.

On August 30, Khandelwal informed Salim that some of his
family members were going to Rajasthan and the latter shared
this information with one of his relatives Khursheed and
friends Suraj and Monu.

When they reached the spot, Khandelwal allegedly handed
over the knives and ropes to them and instructed them to
remain outside the house.

After sometime, Tarun informed them to come in the house
on the pretext of repairing the gas pipeline. After that, they
all entered the house and overpowered all the inmates present
in the house, including Khandelwal by showing weapons.

"As per plan, Khandelwal was kept on ground floor whereas
his wife Rashi and sister Urvashi were kept hostage on the
first floor of the house. After shifting both the ladies to
the first floor, they untied the hands of Khandelwal who
helped them to break open the almirahs," Dhaliwal said.

Khandelwal also helped them to escape from the spot along
with the booty after getting tied and locked himself in the
bathroom of the ground floor.

Khandelwal started dealing in gold in the name of BS
Jewellers at Kotla Mubarak Pur. He started forward trading of
gold on MC-X and suffered huge losses.

"In order to come out of this huge debt due to losses in
gold trading, he hatched a plan to commit robbery in his own
house, especially targeting the valuables and jewellery of his
grandmother," Dhaliwal said.
