New Delhi: The resignation of Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan following the Adarsh housing society scam in Mumbai is an "admission of guilt" by the Congress, the CPI (M) said on Tuesday.

"The resignation is an admission of guilt on part of the Congress. We want a thorough discussion on the entire scam in Parliament," CPI (M) Politburo member Sitaram Yechury said.

His senior party colleague Basudeb Acharia said, "the entire nation has been ashamed due to the scandal. Though he (Chavan) has resigned, mere quitting the post of Chief Minister is not enough. An independent probe into the housing scam is needed".

Acharia demanded an explanation from the Government and sought punishment for all those found guilty, including the "political bosses".

The opposition in Lok Sabha, including the Left parties, today took the government to task over various alleged scams, including those related to allocation of 2G spectrum, Commonwealth Games and Adarsh housing society.
