Commission needed for changing functioning of police: Sheila Dikshit

New Delhi: Former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Sunday pitched for setting up a commission to bring changes in functioning of Delhi Police following outrage over the gruesome murder of a 19-year-old girl here.

Diskhit said systemic changes were required to deal with the issue of women security in the national capital and a panel must be constituted to oversee the changes which were needed to be done to improve policing here.

"There is some shortcoming in the system which is why it is not able to handle. Politicising it and blaming each other will not lead to solutions," she said.

"A commission must be set up to oversee what change must be brought about in police training, how police responds to situations like these and also to look at how various gadgets can be used such as drones and CCTVs so that quick action can be taken," Dikshit said.

Meanwhile, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) chief Ajay Maken accused Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of trying to gain political mileage out of the girl's death and also slammed the police for failing to provide adequate security to women in the city.

"I consider the police responsible. I also hold Arvind Kejriwal responsible for blame game....This is a law and order problem with the police but social initiatives should also be taken so that the males here can be made to understand and sensitised," Maken said.

Nineteen-year-old Meenakshi was brutally stabbed to death allegedly by two brothers living in her neighbourhood in central Delhi's Anand Parbat area for protesting their verbal abuse on July 16.

Kejriwal had yesterday announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family of a girl and ordered a magisterial probe into the case while slamming Delhi Police for the "deteriorating" law and order situation.
