Concerned over the women safety in capital, DCW chief meets Bassi

Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal on Tuesday met police commissioner BS Bassi who assured the former of full cooperation in enhancing safety of women in the national capital.

New Delhi: Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal on Tuesday met police commissioner BS Bassi who assured the former of full cooperation in enhancing safety of women in the national capital.

"Met Police Commissioner and Special CP Law and Order today. They assured support and access to data on molestations that DCW had sought," she said in a tweet.

Maliwal had written to Bassi on August 1 seeking information on cases of crime against women in Delhi to conduct a study on it and to give recommendations to the Centre and State government on the issue of women security.

According to DCW officials, the two major issues raised during the meeting were release of 15 women from a women shelter home and support from police for the commission's initiatives for sex workers at GB road.

"The police commissioner assured DCW of support on both the issues. We wanted the release of 15 such women whose stipulated duration of stay at the women shelter home was over and according to nari niketan officials their release was getting delayed due to delay on part of their respective investigation officers," they said.

Maliwal had yesterday written to Delhi Police demanding it to expedite the cases of release of 15 girls from the women shelter home, where she had conducted a surprise check last week.

"During her visit to GB road, the DCW chief had observed that there are two kinds of issues there. Security of the women who are either trafficked there or forced into the trade or lack of police support for several rehabilitation initiatives. We have been assured of full cooperation," they said.

Delhi Police has also agreed to our demand of deploying a special team comprising of such officials who will work in close coordination with DCW in the area, they added.

"We have discussed a number of issues which will further enhance the safety and security of women in Delhi, and I have assured that Delhi Police will give its utmost cooperation to the DCW so that it can function effectively to strengthen safety and security of women in Delhi," Bassi said after the meeting.
