New Delhi: With heavy rains flooding arterial roads and colonies across Delhi, Congress today blamed BJP- ruled municipal corporations for the chaos and demanded resignation of the three mayors over "total failure" to address the perennial problem of water logging in the city.
Holding the municipal corporations responsible for "failing" to improve the drainage system, senior Congress leader and Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit`s Parliamentary Secretary Mukesh Sharma said that the Delhi Government has been providing adequate funds to them in the last few years.
"All the three mayors must resign immediately owing responsibility for the flood-like situation in Delhi. The normal life has been severely affected as people were stranded on water-logged roads for hours," said Sharma.
He said water logging has been a perennial problem in the city and the civic bodies should have improved the drainage system as Delhi Government has been providing adequate funds to them in the last few years.
"Those ruling the municipal corporations are only interested in making money through corrupt practices. They are not bothered about crumbling drainage system and problem being faced by the common man," said Sharma.
He alleged that three municipal bodies did not carry out proper desilting of major drains which resulted the "massive water logging" following just one hour of rains in the city.
"The BJP is answerable to the people of the city," said Sharma, who is a four-time MLA from Uttam Nagar constituency.
Heavy rains today lashed the city causing massive traffic jams due to waterlogging as vehicles had to negotiate flooded streets which exposed the civic bodies` lack of preparedness.
Waterlogging was reported in several low-lying areas of the city while in some parts, rainwater flooded the basements of flats.
Within an hour of the showers, there was chaos on almost all arterial roads as traffic signals did not function properly and choked drains flooded the streets.
Trees in some parts of the city were uprooted in the heavy rainfall, causing disruption in power supply in some areas. Bumper-to-bumper traffic was witnessed at major intersections such as ITO, Laxmi Nagar, Moti Bagh, Kashmere Gate, Munirka, Dwarka and Dhaula Kuan.
