Credit card cloning gang busted

A gang which allegedly cheated several persons by cloning their credit cards was busted in the national capital and three of its members including two jewellers were arrested, police said today.

several persons by cloning their credit cards was busted in
the national capital and three of its members including two
jewellers were arrested, police said today.

Kamal, Bobby Verma and Vijay Soni were picked from
various locations in the capital and several cloned debit and
credit cards of different banks and one card swipe machine
were recovered from them, they said, adding they were planning
to target foreigners during the upcoming Commonwealth games.

Two other gang members, identified as Vipin and Zahid,
are absconding.

"The gang had planned to collect data of international
cards during the forthcoming Commonwealth Games to make their
clones," a senior police officer claimed.

"For that purpose, they were in contact with several
persons who work in five star hotels and other places where
foreigners as well as players are expected to stay during the
games here," he said.

According to police, the gang allegedly prepare clone of
credit and debit cards of several persons after obtaining data
of their cards from petrol pump outlets and other business
establishments in Delhi and NCR.

Kamal allegedly used to procure the data and Vipin, a
computer expert, allegedly used to prepare the clone of the
credit cards using the data.

To extract data, Kamal allegedly managed to install data
reader at various petrol pump outlets by involving sales boys
who swiped customers` cards to these equipments in lieu of Rs
200 per card, the officer said.

The gang also managed to involve various shopkeepers
including jewellers in the crime and obtained data of their
customers by installing data readers at their shops.

"Bobby Verma and Vijay Soni are jewellers who swiped the
cloned credit and debit cards for 20 per cent commission of
total purchase," the police officer said.

Assistant Manager of a Standard Chartered Bank branch
Javed Chouhan had lodged a complaint on March 26 at Hauz Khas
police station alleging that unknown persons cheated several
customers of his bank by using their cloned credit and debit
cards.

"Investigation of the case is in progress," DCP (south)
HGS Dhaliwal said.
