New Delhi: The Delhi government on Monday decided to impose a blanket ban on the manufacture, storage and use of plastic bags in the city.

The Delhi Cabinet presided by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit took the decision and directed all the concerned authorities like MCD, NDMC and Environment Department to implement the decision.

Officials said there were hundreds of units manufacturing plastic bags and they would be closed down after a notification is issued.

"We have decided to impose a blanket ban on manufacturing, storage and use of plastic bags in the capital," Dikshit told reporters.

Earlier following a court order, the city government in 2009 had banned use of plastic bags in the city but the ban was not effective as the manufacturing units were functioning.

The Delhi government had in January 2009 imposed a ban on the use of plastic bags in various markets, shopping malls, hotels and hospitals but it has not been very effective. About 250 traders have been fined in the last two years for violating the ban.

Various environmental NGOs have been pressing for shutting down such units.

Ban on plastic bags manufacturers..

India boast of small scale industries, but now they are shutting doors to it..

All these are small scale investors, who invest all the wealth what they have and earn a lively-hood.

Atleast 2 to 3 workers each factory, so for 100 units 200-300 workers unemployed.

Atleast few traders and brokers supply raw-materials to produce bags, their lively-hood also gone.

And the owner of the units, who know how to manufacture bags, do you expect them to sell off their machines (where in delhi no one will buy) and place and do what...

What is the governments backup plan to employ the unemployed and reimburse the investors.

Manufacturing bags was not a crime few years back, now government without finding alternative put a ban, and overnite change things..

That is the beauty of our government..

Excellent decision, Mrs. Dixit, but would you actually implement it or keen to get it implemented? or would this be another opportunity for MCD /NDMC/Enviroment department/ YOU and your MINISTERS to earn quick money by allowing them doing it illegally. Your government is expert in such activities.. Let`s see!!!
