New Delhi: The trouble in getting an official accommodation for government employees in the capital is set to ease with the Cabinet on Tuesday clearing a proposal to construct over 4,500 quarters for them.

At a meeting of the Union Cabinet, the proposal for re-development of Kidwai Nagar (East) for construction of residential accommodation for Government employees moved by the Urban Development Ministry was approved.

Around 4,550 "modern, seismologically sound and technically advanced housing units" of various types will be constructed in place of the existing 2,331 old houses, an official spokesperson said.

The project will be implemented through National Buildings Construction Corporation Ltd (NBCC), a Government of India undertaking, in four years.

At present, there is an acute shortage of government housing, especially in the National Capital Region.

"Thus, there is need to undertake redevelopment programme to replace the old buildings with new ones and further to augment the housing stock by optimum utilisation of the existing land resources," the spokesperson said.
