Delhi: Constable shot, another assaulted by gang

A constable was shot and injured and his colleague assaulted with iron rods when they tried to stop a group of unidentified men from stealing.

New Delhi: A constable was shot and injured
and his colleague assaulted with iron rods in the wee hours on Sunday when they tried to stop a group of unidentified men from
stealing from a scrapyard in outer Delhi.

The incident was reported from Bawana Sector V at around 2
AM and the injured policemen were identified as Om Prakash
(42), a head constable, and Mahender (40), a constable.

Five personnel, posted with Narela police station, were
on a patrolling duty in the area when they detected saw 15
people near a scrapyard in suspicious circumstances.

They immediately tried to round them up but the robbers
tried to flee.

"The policemen chased them and managed to catch some of
them and this enraged the gang, who opened fire.

"A bullet hit Mahender`s abdomen," a senior police
official said.

According to police, the gang was armed with pistols and
iron rods.

Prakash was hit by iron rods and he suffered multiple
injuries.

"The police party also fired back but the gang managed to
flee. Seven of them were however arrested.

"Efforts are on to arrest rest of those involved in the
incident," the official said.

He said police have already launched a manhunt to nab the
accused.
