Delhi gang-rape: Cop injured at India Gate dies, family blames public Zeenews Bureau

New Delhi: A Delhi Police constable, who was assaulted by a group of men during the protests against the brutal gang-rape of a 23-year-old girl, succumbed to his injuries early Tuesday.

47-year-old Subash Chand Tomar passed away at 6.40 am after attempts to save him failed. He was on ventilator since his admission at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital on Sunday evening.

He was posted in Karawal Nagar area and was called for maintaining law and order at India Gate area during the protests on Sunday.

Tomar, who hails from Meerut, has left behind a wife and three young children. The family is shocked, with his brother blaming the public for the death. “He was brutally assaulted…public killed him,” the deceased’s son said.

“He was just doing his duty, why has he been killed. If they wanted to protest they could have done it peacefully,” Tomar’s brother said.

Tomar, who joined the police in 1987, was found lying injured on Tilak Marg and was rushed to the hospital.

The police had initially booked eight persons – based on video footage of the assault on Tomar - for rioting and attempt to murder. However, all of them were granted bail yesterday.

One of the eight arrested named Chaman Kumar was an active member of Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Admi Party.

The bail bonds of the eight accused was furnished by Kejriwal’s close aide Manish Sisodia, reports said.

No with the death of Tomar, the police are revisiting the case again and are examining the video footage and other evidence like photos to cancel their bail and book them for murder.

As a mark of respect, the Delhi Police decided that all personnel will donate one day's salary to Tomar's family.

Mass protests on Sunday against the gang-rape had left scores injured and turned the India Gate area into a virtual war zone.

Police and paramilitary personnel had liberally used batons and tear gas to chase away thousands after the emotionally charged protests during the day descended into chaos by evening. However, the protest soon turned violent leaving over 140 people, including policemen, injured.

Meanwhile, some metro stations in central Delhi remained shut for the second day today.

How much longer do you Indians think that you can go on blaming your lower orders for your vile crimes, sacrificing the lower castes to save your fat, stinking hides before your lower orders rise up and slaughter you?

condolenses for the police constable.Protest against brutality and heniousness (rape) is right but murdering a social serviceman who is doing his dutx is very very very wrong.Protesters should cooperate with police.and this should be a lesson for us all in future

Sincerely believe that the Police Department should ensure proper Medical Fitness Certification of all in its staff. The final cause of death is - Heart Attack.

Kavita - Are you a medical professional? While no one can dispute the fact that medical fitness is a must, please note that Heart Attack can be caused by extreme trauma in such cases where a unknown number of people attack a single human being. No one knows what the situation was, so trying to say that the person died of Heart Attack due improper medical fitness is totally incorrect. Please know your facts before shooting off comments which are incorrect

The police should scan videos from different news channels, identify the persons who beat up cop who died of their beating and slap a murder charge on them. Such criminals should not go unpunished.

now will any one protest (online and offline) for the killling of a innocent police constable doing his duty. i dont think so as its only a simple constable and that too a man. we wither have ignorant masses or pseudo intellectuals with very silly emotions. yes, i agree that the rape incident is very barbaric and needs swift and harsh judicial response. my condolences to the families of the girl and the cop. i believe in result oriented action and will continue to protest both the incidents. lets not undermine any human life. what one needs to protest is for efficient and stringent laws against crime in general because every human is valuable.

This is very bad. For one bad thing which was happened, for protesting it should be done peacefully. Unnecessarly one police man died because of this.

Truth of Tomars Death: Yes public Killed them, but only those who were politically inspired, Those guys who were paid to kill police, They wanted to fail the movement, Which Party would have been benefitted to fail this movement? The question itself gives the clue of killer. To win the game of chess, some times the pawns are sacrificed. Let us find the killer....But a little analysis takes our hand to the neck of the queen.....POLITICS IS SO DIRTY AND COMPLICATED, IN WHICH A FATHER MAY KILL HIS SON FOR THE CHAIR.....SO A SIMPLE POLICE CONSTABLE IS NOTHING BUT PAWNS EVEN THE INSPECTORS, COMISSIONERS.... Its a wake up call for all Government Servants....Please dont become Pawn.......

Where are all the protestors now. Where are all those girls who were accusing delhi police of atrocities. Is this justice? To get justice for 1 crime, you commit another crime. What a hypocrist ppl we are.
