Delhi gang-rape victim passes away `peacefully` in Singapore Singapore: A young woman who was flown to Singapore after her brutal gang-rape and torture in the Indian capital died here early Saturday, the Mount Elizabeth Hospital announced.

The victim, whose name has not been revealed, passed away "peacefully" at 4.45 am with her distraught family and Indian diplomats by her side, hospital official Kelvin Loh said in a statement.

"We are very sad to report that the patient passed away peacefully at 4.45 am," Chief Executive Loh said. "Her family and officials from the high commission of India were by her side."

The 23-year-old woman suffered multiple-organ failure after she was raped by six men in a moving bus in Delhi for about 40 minutes on December 16 and dumped her by a roadside.

Her male friend was also badly beaten up and thrown out of the bus.

All six accused, including one who is said to be juvenile, have been arrested and are in Delhi's Tihar Central Jail.

Authorities in India shifted the woman, who had been on ventilator support since her rape, to Singapore on Thursday in last ditch attempt to save her life.

"Despite all efforts by a team of eight specialists in Mount Elizabeth Hospital to keep her stable, her condition continued to deteriorate over these two days," Loh said.

"She had suffered from severe organ failure following serious injuries to her body and brain.”

"She was courageous in fighting for her life for so long against the odds but the trauma to her body was too severe for her to overcome."

BD Athani, the medical superintendent of Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital, said the woman had been speaking to her mother and other family members earlier, giving the impression that she would somehow survive.

But her condition deteriorated rapidly after the operation, with a fatal infection spreading to her chest, lungs and intestine, he said.

India's High Commissioner to Singapore, TCA Raghavan, said the woman's family was "shattered".

"The scale of her injuries (was) very great," Raghavan told the media.

"It was very trying for the family. The girl of course was unconscious...”

"I must say they (the family) bore the entire process with a great deal of fortitude and a great deal of courage."

He said arrangements were on to take the body to India in line with the family's wishes.

The horrific gang-rape, in which the rapists used an iron rod to torture her, triggered angry demonstrations across India against growing sexual crimes against women.

Thou i have not been gifted with the daughter but she ``DAMINI`` i consider more than my own. She has really realised to get up the nation to respect their mothers and sisters. The politicians related to either of the party need to be gunned down as all they are the cowards and selfish. The people of India must awake and have the sticks in their hands to finish all evil who they dont bother for indian nationals. The politicians who they are embraced with daughters should send them alone to the public and see the results for their security. Only then they will know the facts.Jab Aurat ke man main yeh mehsoos hone laga ki uska janama hua hi uski izzat ke dushman hai to uski padaeish hi bandh kar degi. samjo us wakat ki tasveer. Are kuto kush to sharam karo aur samjo is dunia ko nahin to woh din door nahin jab tum logon ki jag janani hi nahin rahegi. The culprits should not be hanged only but tortured upto such extent that their organs get failed one by one slowly and slowly so that one should think thousand times before to conduct such crime. The families of such culprits should also be punished in the same way they conduct crime. Really we solute the departed soul and prey for the peace.

It is heart breaking to hear about the death of the rape victim of Delhi. All my sympathies for the family and friends of the girl. But does the public remember similar sort of rapes occurred in Kandhamal couple of years back and it was the Christian community who silently paid the price of this outrage. Why did not the young people of India protest the same way that time as they did now.

i am very sad, knowing the death of a very young lady caused by a gang of man eaters in the Capital of India. this is shameful to the Nation.the principle of law that let 99 person be released than 1 man be convicted is now a days outdated. the Principle Must be this ``IF YOU WANT TO KEEP YOUR GARDEN BEAUTIFUL, THE THORNY BUSES MUST BE WIPE-OUT`

that six heartless must be boiled in oil or they must be given to the hands of public. they must be punished seriously and it should be viewed by all the citizens. The other heartless may get some fear even by seeing that.......if this is done once we can really reduce inhuman activities like this!!! govt and politns must do this if they really work for our country BY THEIR ACTION and NOT ONLY BY THEIR SPEECH....

A very strong message needs to go out! All the accused in the rape, should be hung in public or stoned to death. This should be telecast across the country - no one should dare commit such an act of brutality ever again.
