New Delhi: Delhi government on Monday cleared
a proposal to set up an umbrella body for transport sector in
the capital which will take care of all issues relating to
infrastructure development as well as managing traffic.

The proposed Delhi Urban Mass Transit Authority
(DUMTA) is envisaged to function as a nodal agency between
various government departments like Traffic Police, Delhi
Transport Corporation (DTC) and PWD to ensure a world class
transport infrastructure in the city as well as to maintain
proper traffic discipline.

The approval for the DUMTA, modelled on similar
systems in New York, London and Boston, came at a meeting of
the Cabinet chaired by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

"We have cleared the proposal. It is aimed at
addressing the concerns of transport sector in the capital,"
Dikshit told reporters here.

The clearance came after the government received a
green signal from Union Home Ministry for setting up of such
an authority, officials said.

The government will bring a bill in the Assembly for
setting up of DUMTA and after approval by Assembly, it will
have to be cleared by Home Ministry as well as Urban
Development Ministry, they said.

Roads and other transport related projects to be
undertaken by PWD will come under DUMTA.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in 2008 had written a
letter to Home Minister P Chidambaram requesting him to hand
over traffic police to city government and Chidambaram had
given his consent for setting up of the body to integrate
functioning of various departments relating to transport.
