Delhi has 16,600 homeless, 184 night shelters

There are 16,600 homeless persons including children and elderly in Delhi and 184 night shelters that can accommodate 14,584 of them are currently functioning, Rajya Sabha was told on Thursday.

New Delhi: There are 16,600 homeless persons including children and elderly in Delhi and 184 night shelters that can accommodate 14,584 of them are currently functioning, Rajya Sabha was told on Thursday.

The Rajya Sabha was informed of this by Minister of State for Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation Babul Supriyo, based on the information furnished by the Delhi Government.

Supriyo said there are 12 night shelters exclusively for children with a capacity of 50 per shelter, seven shelters for women and children having capacity of 50 each, and one exclusively for girls with a capacity of 50.

The minister also informed the House that the Delhi Government has plans to build more night shelters under National Urban Livelihoods Mission and seven sites have been already identified in this regard.

These are at Gazipur, two each in Rohini and Dwarka, Narela and Nangloi Phase-II. Efforts are also underway for procurement of five more plots from DDA for construction of night shelters -- two each in Dwarka and Narela and one at Rohini.
