New Delhi: Delhi Jal Board, the water
distribution agency, today sought central security cover for
pipelines and water lifting points in neighbouring Uttar
Pradesh through which water comes to the national capital.
The demand comes after Jat agitators in Muradnagar in UP
had cut off water supply to the national capital from Upper
Ganga Canal on Sunday demanding reservation in government
jobs, resulting in massive water crisis in East and South
DJB, in a letter to Delhi Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta,
requested the city government to take up the issue with the
Centre for providing central security cover at water lifting
points as well as pipelines supplying water to the city.
"We have also requested the government to take up the
issue with Uttar Pradesh government to ensure proper security
along the pipelines and water lifting points," a top DJB
official told PTI.
South and East Delhi had faced massive water crisis on
Sunday and Monday as Jat leaders had stopped water supply from
Upper Ganga Canal to Delhi demanding reservation in government
The protesters lifted the agitation yesterday but the
water supply returned to normal in the city only this morning.
Taking strong exception to the siege over the water
lifting point by the agitators, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila
Dikshit had yesterday said water "is a fundamental right" and
nobody should stop water supply whatever be the agitation.
Officials said Delhi government is likely to take up
the request of DJB with the central government.
