New Delhi: In a first of its kind project
in India, all overground and underground utilities in Delhi
like telephone lines, water pipes and establishments such as
shops and offices have been mapped in a three dimensional
format to facilitate improved urban planning and governance.
Under the Delhi State Spatial Data Infrastructure
(DSSDI) project, all the underground as well as overground
utilities in the city were mapped using state-of-art
technology and they will now be made available to almost 30
departments of city government through a specially created
portal.
The IT department of the Delhi Government had launched
the project almost 18 months back aiming to make Delhi a new
age city and to help improve urban planning and governance.
"The project is almost completed. Initially the geo-
spatial data will be available in the offices of divisional
commissioners," a senior official of the IT department said.
He said with completion of the project, Delhi joined
an elite group of cities like New York, London and Paris where
such kind of three dimensional mapping of underground and
overground utilities are available.
The portal developed using geo spatial technology
would be accessible to 30 line departments of Delhi
Government.
The official said the availability of underground
utilities in digital form would enable the concerned line
departments to undertake preventive maintenance programmes as
well as locate the fault in the underground utilities.
The digital data also comprises all roads, routes of
Delhi Transport Corporation, Metro, ward and district
boundaries, police stations locations, underground and over
ground utilities, parks and hospitals etc.
The portal will provide access to departments like
MCD, NDMC, DDA, Delhi Police, besides bodies of Central and
state government.
The project will also create a Land Information System
(LIS) in digital format. Officials said under the LIS, a
proper digitised databank of all the available land would be
prepared.
The portal will also be used for disaster management,
traffic management, security of important buildings and other
valuable infrastructural assets in Delhi.
The project also provides for the installation of
wireless cameras at different points in the city to facilitate
the monitoring of these areas.
Such monitoring will have multiple benefits such as
efficient traffic management and prevention of anti-social
activities.
