Delhi MCD polls: Increase in vote share for Cong

According to State Election Commission, BJP polled 22,57,848 votes or 36.71 per cent while Congress got 18,78,605 or 30.54 per cent.

New Delhi: Congress may have suffered defeat in all three Delhi municipalities, but saw a rise of 1.37 per cent in its vote share to 30.54 per cent while the BJP only saw a slight increase of 0.54 per cent in the votes polled.

The vote share of BJP, which polled around 3,79,243 lakh votes more than Congress in the April 15 polls, rose to 36.71 per cent as it handed down a shocking defeat to Congress and Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit who was among those leading the part campaign.

BSP got 9.99 per cent or 6,14,250 votes of the around 61 lakh votes polled in the April 15 polls to three newly created municipal corporations -- South, North and East.

According to State Election Commission, BJP polled 22,57,848 votes or 36.71 per cent while Congress got 18,78,605 or 30.54 per cent.

Out of the 272 wards in three corporations, BJP won 138 while Congress won 77 and BSP 15.

In the 2007 polls to the undivided Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), BJP had bagged 36.17 per cent of the 42.35 lakh votes polled while Congress got 29.17 per cent. BSP`s vote share was 9.87 per cent.

Independents, 1,174 of them, garnered 14.23 per cent or 8,75,399 votes while NCP managed 2.26 per cent votes. NCP had contested in 81 wards and won six seats.

Samajwadi Party, which came into the polls riding on its success in Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, could garner 1.93 per cent or 1,18,991 votes. SP had won two wards out of the 107 it contested.

Left parties -- CPI(M), CPI and Forward Bloc -- altogether got 19,403 votes out of the over 61 lakh votes polled. They contested in 35 seats.

Interestingly, CPI(M) which contested only eight seats
got more votes than CPI which fought in 18 seats and Forward Bloc which fielded candidates in nine seats. CPI(M) polled 9,132 votes while CPI got 7,138 and Forward Bloc 3,133 votes.

Underlining the fact that north Delhi is BJP`s strong hold, the figures shows that the party was way ahead of Congress by garnering 40.51 per cent or 9,61,876 votes in North Corporation. Congress was way behind at 31.96 per cent or 7,58,676 votes.
The margin between Congress and BJP was the least in South Corporation. BJP polled 33.84 per cent or 7,62,089 votes while Congress got 29.19 per cent or 6,57,285 votes.

In East Corporation, BJP got 35.02 per cent or 5,33,883 votes and Congress garnered 30.34 per cent or 4,62,644 votes.

Among the national and regional parties recognised by Election Commission, National Conference got the least number of 126 votes. It had contested in one seat only.
