Delhi MLA shooting case: Four detained Zeenews Bureau

New Delhi: Four people were detained on Sunday in connection with INLD MLA Bharat Singh being shot at inside his office in Najafgarh on Saturday.

According to police, personal rivalry is said to be the suspected reason of the murder attempt on the MLA.

Bharat Singh, who is also the brother of MCD councillor Krishan Pahalwan, was yesterday shot at inside his office at Najafgarh's Sarangpur village, when four-five people opened fire at him. His uncle Dharampal also suffered bullet injuries.

According to officials, both Singh and Dharampal were rushed to Mata Chanan Devi Hospital.

Police sources said Singh had suffered two-three bullet injuries.

Singh used to come to the office in the morning and hold discussions with his close aides before heading out for other works.

An eye-witness said, "He got down near his office. Around 7-8 persons greeted him and then they opened fire. He ran inside. They followed him inside and shot at him. His uncle Dharampal also got injured."

The incident created quite a stir with MLAs already demanding police protection in wake of increased "threat perception" while having to deal with difficult situations in public interest.

The incident led Sheila Dikshit to call on city Police Commissioner B K Gupta to discuss the security scenario in the capital.

“It is a matter of great concern that an MLA has been attacked. We have to take precaution. The MLAs have raised the issue of threats to them yesterday and today this incident has happened. Security should be enhanced," Dikshit said, adding these type of incidents should not happen.

She said the Police Commissioner had told her that Personal Security Officers (PSOs) have been provided to a number of MLAs who have raised security concerns.

The issues regarding security of MLAs will be discussed on Tuesday, she said.

Condemning the attack, Leader of Opposition in Assembly VK Malhotra alleged that Delhi is becoming a crime capital of India.

"If an MLA can be shot in daylight, that's very very serious situation is in Delhi. Delhi has become a capital of murderers," he said.

INLD President and former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala alleged that lawlessness was growing in Congress-ruled States and the attack on the party's Delhi unit chief, Bharat Singh, was another "example of this".

not only MLAs but thousands of citizens are shot, stabbed or killed daily in the country. Politicians are often found indulging in wrongdoings wheras innocent citizens are killed plainly because there is no system to make criminals feel that they can not escape punishment. If there is a strong system of punishment and it is made to understand there no criminal can escape it , the crime rate will automatically come down. giving police cover to politicians and not doing anything to make a system working for all is the root reason of all these crimes. Giving police protection to MLAs or other politicians is foolish and can never check crime.
