New Delhi: Delhi Assembly today passed a
resolution demanding full statehood to the capital with an
angry Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit attacking Lieutenant
Governor Tajendra Khanna, accusing him of undermining the
powers of her government and interfering in its functioning.
Unhappy over Khanna`s rejection of Delhi Cabinet`s
decision on raising circle rates, Dikshit even went on to say
that assembly and the city government should be done away with
if they are not allowed to function.
"We cannot work with irritants. We cannot work under
duress... If we are not allowed to function then why we
need assembly, why we need ministers, why we need government.
Dissolve them," she said, noting that her government has been
facing great difficulties in its functioning due to
interference by the "constitutional head".
"This is a very serious matter to me. It is a question
of encroachment over our rights. I am not encroaching on DDA`s
functioning," Dikshit said.
Her outburst came as the House passed a unanimous
resolution demanding full statehood to Delhi. The opposition
BJP MLAs were not present in the House as they were evicted
earlier for creating disruption while demanding setting up of
a House Committee to probe irregularities in CWG spendings.
Dikshit said one cannot expect us to govern "by
clipping our wings... give us wings and space to fly to
fulfill the aspirations of those people who have elected this
government not only once but thrice consecutively."
