New Delhi: A 31-year-old man, who had been on the run for last three years after allegedly murdering his girlfriend to get rid of her as his marriage was fixed elsewhere, has been arrested.

The accused Ram Kumar, a resident of Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh, was arrested yesterday following a tip off from Pushp Vihar Area here when he came to meet his friend, a senior police official said on Sunday.

He carried a cash reward of Rs 50,000 on his head.

According to police, the incident had taken place in December 2011 when body of a 26-year-old married woman -- a resident of Rohini Sector 1 in Delhi -- was found in a house in Vijay Vihar area.

"During investigation, it was revealed that the victim was reportedly having relationship with Ram Kumar who was living as a tenant in the house from where the body was recovered.

The suspect Ram Kumar was untraceable and went underground," said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav.

Also that Kumar had committed the murder.

Several teams were formed to trace him and raids were conducted at his native place and other suspected hideouts, but he managed to evade arrest for more than three years, he said.

Yesterday, police received tip off that Kumar would come to?Pushp Vihar Area to meet his friend following which a trap was laid and he was nabbed.

On interrogation, he confessed that he had murdered the woman. Kumar also told police that he had done BSc (Biology) and came to Delhi in the year 2007 to earn his livelihood.
He worked as a medical representative.

In the meantime, he came in contact with the victim who was an employee at a clinic in Sector 3, Rohini, Delhi.

They developed close relationship but after some time, he started ignoring her as his marriage was fixed with someone else by his family, police said, adding the woman was not happy with this as she intended to settle down with him.

This became a bone of contention between them and led to frequent fights, they added.

"On December 4, 2011 at about 10 AM, the victim came to the house of accused where a little scuffle ensued between them over the issue and he strangulated her to death. Then he locked the room and fled away to his native place leaving behind the dead body," said Yadav.

He further disclosed that he had moved to Howrah and Asansol, West Bengal and did petty jobs but later returned to Kanpur, UP and started living there on fake identity, police said.
