New Delhi: A head constable was killed and a constable injured during traffic checking here on Wednesday morning when a speeding SUV rammed into them while trying to avoid getting caught.

The incident took place in south-east Delhi's Sunlight Colony area at around 7:45 am and the deceased has been identified as Nehander, Head Constable attached with Traffic Police.

Constable Ankit, who was with Nehander during the checking, was injured.

"Nehander and Ankit were posted on toll road leading to Noida to check overspeeding vehicle. The interceptor vehicle found that an UP registration vehicle was speeding beyond the permissible limit of 70 km per hour.

"They signalled the vehicle to stop but the driver in a bid to escape prosecution overtook a vehicle and ran over the policemen. The driver fled in the vehicle after hitting the policemen," a senior police official said.
