District Judge seeks details about pending criminal cases

The district and sessions judge has asked the record keepers of all the nine district courts here to furnish details regarding pending cases in which chargesheets have been filed.

New Delhi: The district and sessions judge
has asked the record keepers of all the nine district courts
here to furnish details regarding pending cases in which
chargesheets have been filed.

"You are requested to provide information ... about the
details of cases pending in your court wherein chargesheets
have already been filed," District and Sessions Judge G P
Mittal has asked his subordinate judges in an official
communication.

In a bid to ascertain the total number of accused who
are in jail in cases relating to serious offences, the judge
has sought information regarding the penal provisions under
which the accused were being tried and maximum jail term for
the offences.

"The information sought are judicial in nature and
moreover, it would put an extra burden on over-burdened court
clerks and record keepers," an employee of a trial court said.
An average of 500 cases are pending disposal with a
sessions court and about 10,000 matters are pending with a
metropolitan magistrate.
