New Delhi: Hundreds of hopeful students
seeking admission to the Delhi University thronged the
colleges today as institutions started taking in students for
the new academic session.
Aspirants lined up at various colleges in both north
and south campuses to check if they had made it to the first
cut-off list for admission, which was announced last night.
The first cut-off list indicated that B Com (Honours),
Economics and English continued to be the most popular course
with students.
However, cut-off percentages did not go up remarkably
as was being speculated though the minimum marks needed for
ensuring a seat in top colleges remained over 92 per cent.
While some students came back relieved, having made it
to the cut-off lists, some were disappointed for not getting
admission in their favourite college.
Administration officials, manning the admission
counters, said they usually advise students to go by the
course of their choice rather than the college.
"Whichever college you study from, you will get a DU
degree after all. Course is more important, we tell students,"
an official said.
According to the first cut-off list, the minimum marks
required for admission to the B Com (Hons) course in Sri Ram
College of Commerce ranges between 95.25 to 98.75, in
Kirorimal it is 95.5, in Hansraj college it is 95 to 97 per
cent and 95.25 and 98.75 per cent in Hindu college.
The cut-off for the course in Lady Sriram college and
Sri Venkateshwar college is both pegged at 95 per cent, while
in Ramjas college and Kamla Nehru it is 94.5 to 97.5 and 92 to
96 per cent respectively.
"The cut-offs in the first list for most of the
prominent colleges are too high. I hope they will come down in
the subsequent lists," said a disappointed student at the
North campus.
The second and third lists will be released on June 26
and July 1 respectively.
In Sriram College of Commerce, the cut-off for BA
(Hons) in Economics is 93.75 to 96.75.
In Science courses, BSc (Computer Science), Physic
(Honours) and BSc (Life Science) emerged as the most popular
courses.
In case of Economics (Honours), another popular course
among students, the cut-off marks were highest in Lady Sriram
College, Hindu college and Hansraj college.
While in LSR, the minimum marks that will fetch you a
seat in Economic (Honours) are 95.25 per cent, in Hansarj it
is 93.25 to 95.25 while in Hindu it is 93 to 96.74.
The first phase of the admission in the 60-odd
affiliated colleges that started today will continue till June
25, the university authorities said.
DU is offering 54,000 seats this year for its
undergraduate programmes, 5,000 more than last year`s 49,000.
The process of sale and submission of forms for
admission to the university`s colleges began on May 28 and
thousands of students flocked to North and South campus for
buying forms, counselling sessions and submitting them.
The cut-off list was announced last night amid a call
by the Delhi University Teachers Association, asking teachers
to dissociate themselves from the admission procedure.
DUTA President Aditya Narayan Mishra claimed over 98
per cent of teachers had responded positively to the Union`s
call.
However, the Delhi High Court restrained the Delhi
University teachers, agitating against implementation of
semester system for undergraduate students, from obstructing
the admission process for the academic year 2010-2011.
"Keeping in mind the career of large number of
students, it is ordered that till the next date of hearing
defendant(DUTA) and its office bearers are restrained from
obstructing admission process in any manner whatsoever," an
order said.
