E-challan to be operational in Delhi this year

Traffic violators will not get away easily when the e-challan system is enforced this year, a Delhi Traffic Police official said on Friday.

New Delhi: Traffic violators will not get away easily when the e-challan system is enforced this year, a Delhi Traffic Police official said on Friday.

"A system via which traffic police will have records of all traffic violations against defaulting drivers and vehicles will become fully operational by March. Its initial phase will be inaugurated this month," said a traffic police officer.

"This will initiate a new regime of better enforcement by having higher penalities for second and subsequent prosecutions and ensuring point systems for supervision and cancellation of driving licenses," official said.

The system entails the provision and distribution of hand-held devices to challaning officers. The information will be transmitted to a central server which will process the details in addition to updating its database.

The traffic police have been working for years to enforce the e-challan system in the capital.
