New Delhi: An elderly man and his grandson were killed when the scooty they were riding on was hit by a speeding SUV in east Delhi's Anand Vihar area here on Monday morning.

The deceased have been identified as Rishabh (16) and his 65-year-old grandfather Sulekh Chand.

The minor boy lived with his parents in Yojna Vihar area and studied in class eighth at a local school while his grandfather, who had retired from his job, lived in Krishna Nagar.

According to police, the incident took place around 10:30 AM when Sulekh Chand was going to drop his grandson to his parent's residence after he had spent the weekend at Chand's house.

"As they reached near Ashoka Niketan and were crossing a traffic signal, their scooty was hit by a speeding Toyota Fortuner from behind. Both of them were thrown off the scooty which was dragged up to several metres by the SUV," said a police official.

The SUV's driver fled from the spot soon after the incident, leaving the vehicle behind even as locals rushed to the rescue of the two injured persons.

After someone made a PCR call, the victims were rushed to a nearby hospital where Rishabh was declared brought dead while Chand succumbed to his injuries during treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU).
